These figures are a reinterpretation of the classic penrose mosaics. If you print them on this scale, you will get very manageable pieces. You must have at least 20 of each to be able to create really interesting mosaics, but they are pretty quick to print.

The 4 inch model is meant to display the conic sections in mathematics on a 3D scale. The conic sections come from 2 cones, stacked on top of each other (tip to tip), being cut by planes in a 3D space, and the resulting cuts create 2D graphs. The sphericon is a three-dimensional solid with one side and two edges. It was first introduced by the Israeli game and toy inventor David Haran Hirsch who patented it in Israel in 1980. It was given its name by Colin Roberts, of Hertfordshire, England, who also explored it. This is a set of conic sections for class room use. There is also a connector for joining two sets of sections so that both halves of the hyperbola can be illustrated. Conic sections are pretty standard, but I used the approximate sizes and the idea for dowels from karlcrosby's design. The major change is that the hyperbola is from a slice perpendicular to the xy plane to allow for both halves to be illustrated.

The two cones have equal cross-sectional areas, and hence equal volumes. The pair makes a nice hands-on demonstration of Cavalieri's Principle. This is a visual demonstration of a calculus concept where you find the volume of a solid by integrating over it's cross sections. This visualization demonstrates multiple levels integration of varying precision. I used the function f(x)=-x² for this demonstration because that's a pretty simple equation to understand and it's also easier to model/manufacture.

Its a triangle, twisted, extruded and supported inside and out. There is actually a lot going on with this design but it has been incremental, so enjoy! Please scale down to fit your printer dimensions but I found 25% scale of original is VERY strong. Added a second copy of the scad file. (less comment) Final Version is updated with vectors and modules. MUCH cleaner and easier to read. Also, much easier to modify and create with.

A little collection of sphericons designed with Solidworks 2016. They have sharp grooves which make it easier to paint. Also included are screen shots of design sketches which may help if you design with another program. They are designed in two halves which are connected by a 5/8 long 1/4 inch wood dowel allowing the two halves to rotate for an interesting effect. They roll in an unusual way also. I borrowed idea from your bookmark. I thought, that blank space on bookmark is usefull for something other, like text. Simply with Openscad you can add any text and symbols, as long chosen font have these symbols.
